『蝦夷草紙』で厚岸湖・風蓮湖と並び、海水が出入りして潮の干満がある湖として説明される。根室方面の温根沼などが候補で、阿寒の内陸湖オンネトーとは『蝦夷草紙』の水質・潮汐の説明が合わない。
名称の言語的由来は未確認。
