釧路（くしろ）に対応する歴史的地名。『蝦夷草紙』では石炭を産する場所や沿岸の海産物の説明に現れる。「場所」は交易・漁業の区域を指し、現在の釧路市域と同一ではない。
名称の言語的由来は未確認。
