『蝦夷草紙』で、蝦夷地から戻る筆者が磯の砂原に休んだ村。村人からニシン不漁と祈祷の話を聞く場所として現れる。国文学研究資料館本は「荒谷村」、龍谷大学本は「荒各村」と翻刻され、字形の違いを残す。
名称の言語的由来は未確認。
