『蝦夷草紙』で択捉島の渡海口から北へ進んだ所の集落。乙名ヲウシルの稼場に古い碇があり、紀州の船の漂着記録と照合される。網走のモヨロ貝塚とは『蝦夷草紙』の島が異なる。
名称の言語的由来は未確認。
