奥尻島（おくしりとう）。渡島半島西方の日本海上にある島。『藻汐草』乾巻の地名一覧に「ヲクシリ」と記される。町は、向こうの島を表すアイヌ語名に由来すると説明する。
奥尻町によると、イクシュン・シリ（I-kus-un-sir）がイクシリ（ikusir）に変化した名で、「向こうの島」を意味する。
