『続日本紀』の霊亀元年（715）の記事で、須賀君古麻比留らが郡家の設置を願う村。昆布を献上する人々が国府までの遠路を訴える文脈に現れ、古代の陸奥に関わる地名として読む。
名称の言語的由来は未確認。
