『蝦夷草紙』で乙名シヨンコ／シユシユの所在地として記される。熊胆の鑑定に通じた人々を呼ぶ場面に現れ、二つの写本で地名の翻刻が異なる。単独の音形から現代集落を割り当てない。
名称の言語的由来は未確認。
