野付（のつけ）方面の村に対応する地名。『蝦夷草紙』では北海道東岸から国後島へ渡る起点とされる。現在の野付半島・海峡沿岸が地理的な手掛かりで、『蝦夷草紙』の里数は概算。
名称の言語的由来は未確認。
