樺太（からふと）、現在のサハリン島。宗谷海峡の北に位置する南北に長い島で、『蝦夷草紙』ではアイヌ・ウイルタ・ニヴフなどの居住域や大陸との交易・渡海経路が語られる。島の名と同音の語句は区別して読む。
名称の言語的由来は未確認。
