地名の基部「太田」はアイヌ語由来。「ヲヲタ」などの漢字表記とする『日本歴史地名大系』は山名としての使用と『北海随筆』の表記も挙げる。「山」は日本語の地形語。アイヌ語形の細かな分解・意味は不明。
