メナシはアイヌ語の東方を表す語に関わる地域呼称。蝦夷地の東側、特に根室・知床方面を指す用法がある。『蝦夷藪話』でも箇所によって指す範囲が異なり、語彙表の「東」という訳語と地名としての用法は別物。
本文の呼称からの暫定分類。語源と現代の地名との対応は未確認。
