『蝦夷草紙』ではチヘャノムイというラッコ猟場にロシア人が付けた名として記される。音はサハリンに似るが、『蝦夷草紙』の位置は得撫方面で、樺太島そのものは指さない。
名称の言語的由来は未確認。
