北海道駒ヶ岳南麓の湖。江戸期の大沼は現在の大沼と小沼を合わせた呼称で、『北海随筆』の用例もこの歴史的範囲として読む。本文では小沼と並び、土用中に水鳥が群れる場所として記される。
日本語の訳名。七飯町歴史館はアイヌ語ポロ・トー（大きな水たまり）の意味を漢字に移した名称と説明する。日本語形と、そのもとになったアイヌ語を区別して記録する。
