乙部（おとべ）。渡島半島西岸、江差の北の沿岸地域。『北海随筆』では江指からの里程、巡検、熊が馬を襲う話に現れる。町の解説は、川口の沼を表すアイヌ語名を現在の姫川に結び付ける。

Ainu

乙部の名は、現在の姫川を指すオ・ト・ウン・ペ（o-to-un-pe）に由来するという。乙部町は「川口に沼があるもの」と説明している。
