奥尻島（おくしりとう）。渡島半島の西方、日本海上の島。『北海随筆』では仙見ヶ嶽からの眺望に「ヲコシリ」と記される。町はアイヌ語で向こうの島を表す名に由来すると説明する。
奥尻町によると、イクシュン・シリ（I-kus-un-sir）がイクシリ（ikusir）に変化した名で、「向こうの島」を意味する。
