熊石
熊石（くまいし）。現在の八雲町西部、日本海岸の旧熊石町に当たる地域。『北海随筆』は松前領の西の限りとし、亀田とともに往来を調べる関所を記す。アイヌ語由来で、魚を干す竿や雲石の影に結び付ける語源説がある。
クマ・ウシ（Kuma-us-i）は「魚を干す竿のある所」の意味。八雲町はこの説のほか、クマ・ウン（kuma-un）を雲石の黒い影に結び付ける説も紹介している。
