ヤム

Ainu

「冷」

yammedium
Batchelor distinguishes Yam cool from its chestnut homonym. Coldness is also present in the retrieved Oda narrative and Kuzuno texts, so the Japanese 冷 is supported. Tamura’s yam chestnut entry and many corpus matches belong to another sense. nam is an independently attested cold-word comparison, including Batchelor’s synonym, but changing the source’s ヤ to ナ is unnecessary.
Batchelor 1938 s.v. Yam cool, PDF p.575; Hirayama 2013 part 3 s.v. ヤム¹「① 冷;② 〈地名〉冷くアル (yam)」; Tamura 1996 s.v. nam「冷たい(「しゃっこい」)、 (熱くあるべきものが)ぬるい。…」 and yam「栗(の実)。…」Source passage
