Kani is directly documented as the independent first-person pronoun and matches カニ under 吾. Kuani is a related form separately present on the same source line. Batchelor also records kani “metal/money”; that homonym and compounds containing it must not be counted as evidence for “I.” Retained conversation examples establish the pronominal use without making every retrieved occurrence a pronoun.
