「冽」

rakkamedium
Hirayama’s clear-water interpretation supplies a plausible comparison for 冽. Batchelor distinguishes a river shoal from putting muddy water to settle. Hirayama prints 洌 and identifies the clear-water entry; the Samani vocabulary records intransitive rakka for water becoming clear or starch settling. This supports retaining rakka and raising confidence, while the Japanese gloss and transitive/intransitive differences remain qualified. Kanjipedia distinguishes 冽 “cold” from 洌 “clear/cold” and notes their mixed use. A cold-water reading of the Japanese remains possible; the Ainu evidence consulted here supports clearing or settling. Ratci is the Samani editor’s Saru comparison. The separate 瀬/ラツカ entry is unchanged.
Batchelor 1938 s.v. Rakka「n. A shoal. A dry space in a river. A sand bank. A shallow. / v.t. To put to settle as muddy or thick water.」, PDF p.407; Hirayama 2013 part 3 s.v. Source passage
