Lexical interpretation and sources

チユツ゚カモイ「日月」cup kamuy

Interpretation confidence: medium

Kayano gives cupkamuy for the sun or moon deity, and Nakagawa’s cup kamuy names the sun. These support the lexical comparison with 日月. The current transcription チユツ゚カモイ has an unusual marked final consonant, but comparison with nearby プ glyphs in the facsimile makes チユプカモイ a credible alternative visual reading. The transcription is preserved and the glyph remains qualified; an actual /t/ versus /p/ sound difference is not established. カモイ is compared with modern kamuy, without equating the historical vowels.
