Lexical interpretation and sources

チヌカルグル「北斗」cinukarkur

Interpretation confidence: medium

Ota explicitly identifies Cinukarkur with the Big Dipper, fitting 北斗. Batchelor’s related Chinukara-guru is glossed north star, so the sources disagree about the celestial referent. Cinukara kur preserves Batchelor’s extra vowel as a comparison. NINJAL corpus record ninjal-dict/043#32 also gives cinukarkur for 北斗七星. The agreement in form and explicit Big Dipper gloss supports retaining medium certainty; the different referents in the comparative sources remain distinct.

太田 2022 s.v. ほくとしちせい(北斗七星); Batchelor 1938 s.v. Chinukara-guru「n. The north star. A guardian. Also called Chinukara-kamui, i. e. “Divine guardian.” Festive bears are supposed to becom…」 (p.82)
