Lexical interpretation and sources

ウーラリ「霧」urari

Interpretation confidence: medium

Batchelor explicitly records Urari for mist or haze, supporting the historical final リ. Nakagawa’s koyki example also has Roman urari with a mist meaning, but its corresponding kana is ウラㇼ: that source corroborates the sense while leaving an internal spelling discrepancy. Tamura’s urar covers fog, haze and mist and remains an alternative. The earlier 霧/霞 difference is within the documented semantic range; the historical long mark remains in the source transcription.

Batchelor 1938 s.v. Urari「n. Mist. Haze.」 (p.539); 中川裕 1995 s.v. koyki「〜をいじめる。…」; 田村すず子 1996 s.v. úrar「霧(「ガス」)、 かすみ、 もや、 白い雲。…」
