「蝦夷」

aynumedium
Aynu is independently documented as “human”, “man”, and the Ainu ethnonym, depending on context. The contrast with neighbouring Wajin and Russian labels supports the ethnic sense here. The current lemma aynu is retained beside the source’s アイノ; it does not claim that the historical final vowel was necessarily identical to modern u. Other uses of aynu in the corpus do not all refer to ethnicity.
