「峯」

sir kitaymedium
Hirayama compares the historical record with sirkitay “summit”, using place-name evidence. Tamura independently gives kitay “top, summit”, including nupuri kitay. These support the summit analysis, while the whole sir compound and joined versus spaced spelling remain less securely established than the component kitay.
Hirayama 2013 part 3 s.v. シリキタイ「① 峰;② 〈地名〉山頂(sirkitay)」; Tamura 1996 s.v. kitay「(所は kitayke(he) キタイケ(ヘ))…のてっぺん、 頂上。…」Source passage

「高」

rihigh
Tamura directly attests ri for being high, including tall mountains and the sun’s height. The separate skinning verb ri is irrelevant. The modern reading omits the source’s repeated vowel; it does not determine how long that vowel was pronounced in the historical record.

Kes “end”, ka “top”, and pes “down along” are component comparisons only. Neither kes kak pes nor kes ka k pes establishes all intervening material or the complete name for wind blowing out from the beach. 「泊ゟ出し風」

Hirayama leaves this wind name unidentified. Batchelor’s Tomak means mire or silt and supplies no wind sense. To mak pes remains a possible lake/back/downward division, with the connection to 泊 “anchorage” unproved. The complete expression is unresolved.

「峠」

rucishigh
Kayano and Yoshimura’s Mukawa vocabulary directly identify rucis as a mountain pass. Batchelor gives the same sense with older ch/sh spelling. These are whole-word sense matches, beyond the separately occurring cis “cry” or “winding path”.

Kayano prints the phrase as mak peka and illustrates travelling from the inland/back side. Batchelor likewise treats it as adverbial. This is compatible with 岡の道 as a route inland, but the dictionaries do not attest the expression as a road noun.

「燃る」

The selected division identifies ape “fire” while preserving the recorded セベク as sepek. Hirayama compares abe-seseku “fire heat”, and Tamura attests sesek “be hot”; these comparisons require changing the second consonant. Neither proves sepek or the exact burning sense. Ape ruy is independently attested for fire burning, but its letters do not match this record.

petnokamedium
The complete word petnoka is directly attested for the Milky Way. Tamura and Kayano analyse pet “river” plus noka “image/form”. The joined modern spelling follows their headwords and NINJAL. These later records support the lexical identification without dating their precise pronunciation to the source period.

「気」

paririmedium
Batchelor gives Pariri “air”, while Tamura distinguishes parir “billowing smoke” and its possessed form pariri. These permit an air/vapour comparison with broad 気, but do not settle which sense or grammatical form is intended. The inherited “breath rises” gloss is comparison evidence, not an independent modern attestation. The image’s ハーリヽ preserves both length and repetition marks. The sole exact corpus hit is the 1897 Bible translation’s Kamui pariri for divine inspiration; that religious translation does not independently verify the historical 気 sense.

「虹」

raocimedium
Batchelor directly lists Raochi for rainbow, supporting raoci as a single selected reading of ラヲチ. Kayano and Nakagawa attest rayoci; Rawoci also occurs with an explicit rainbow translation in the 2011 Bihoro intermediate textbook, step 29 (corpus zaidan-textbooks/bihoro-intermediate/29#4). The variation does not justify silently imposing rayoci on this historical form. The textbook says its examples are mostly newly composed, so this is a modern pedagogical comparison, not proof of historical or independently recorded speech.

「牽牛」

cikusakurmedium
Batchelor explicitly gives Chikusa-guru both as the herd-boy star and a ferryman, supporting the 牽牛 identification. Ota also lists Cikusakur but cites アイヌの星, so that entry is source-dependent. The ferryman sense is independently present in Batchelor; it does not prove a detailed etymology or the date of the name.

「織女」

Marapto “feast” or “bear’s head” and noka “image/form” are attested components. The inherited feast-image gloss and Hirayama’s component comparison do not independently identify the full expression as 織女. Tamura’s Marattosapa is a different male star grouping; its shared maratto element does not establish this recorded female-star label. Retain the form and leave the celestial identification unresolved.
Inherited Fukasawa comparison in Uehara table; Hirayama 2013 part 3 s.v. マラフトノカ「① 織女(※織姫星);② 祭(marapto)、形(ノカ)」; Kayano 1996 s.v. marapto「①宴,饗宴,祝宴.… / ②熊の頭.」; Tamura 1996 s.v. noka「何かの形を模したもの(絵、 像、 模型など)。…」, Marattosapa「殺した熊の頭。… / (星座名)(天の川の西側にある男の星座。…」Source passage

「参宿」

iutanimedium
Mukawa iutani is directly attested for a pestle. Kayano’s iyutani-nociw identifies the three central Orion stars, while Tamura separately records Iyutani as a female star grouping with a Milky Way narrative. These support the pestle-shaped celestial comparison for 参宿, while the compound evidence and differing star traditions do not fix the exact extent of the historical grouping. Ordinary pestle occurrences alone do not attest the star sense.

「水の湧」

wakka popmedium
Batchelor explicitly lists Wakka-pop for a water spring, and separately gives pop for bubbling up. Wakka pop is a transparent modern division of the recorded expression; wakkapop remains a joined comparison. The full dictionary sense matches 水の湧, although the historical record itself does not mark word boundaries. NINJAL’s exact wakka pop corpus example means water boiling; the spring judgement rests on Batchelor’s separate lexical entry.

pe popmedium
Pe “water/liquid” plus pop “bubble up” accounts for the source form and is supported by neighbouring ワツカボプ. The inherited comparison likewise reads water welling up. This is a component-based phrase analysis; the exact complete pe pop expression has weaker independent evidence than Batchelor’s Wakka-pop.

「窪い」

sikotmedium
Tamura explicitly attests the common noun síkot for a bowl-shaped depression, separately from the place name Sikot. NINJAL also gives sikot “large hollow”. This directly supports the hollow sense behind 窪い; Batchelor’s unrelated “be born” entry does not.

「水源」

pet etokomedium
Tamura and Kayano attest petetok for a river source and etoko(ho) as a possessed form. Yoshimura’s Mukawa vocabulary directly gives both pet etoko and petetoko for the upper river, while Hiraga’s 1969 narrative uses petetoko with a water-source translation. These support the final vowel and raise the identification to medium. The historical internal ヱイ sequence remains unexplained. Pet etoko removes inherited morpheme hyphens; petetoko is an equally attested joined alternative.

「汐干」

sirar satmedium
NINJAL directly lists sirar sat for the tide going out, matching 汐干. Tamura supplies the components “rock” and “be dry”; those components alone would be weaker evidence than the complete phrase. The source’s final vowels remain part of the preserved historical transcription.

「汐満」

The source image clearly pairs シラリハア with 汐満. Tamura and NINJAL give sirarha for the opposite movement, the tide receding; Hirayama reproduces the same disagreement. Joined sirarha follows the modern headword, but its fit to this gloss remains unresolved. Sirarpes is a semantic comparison for rising tide whose ending does not match the recorded ハア. A reversed heading or a different historical use remains possible; neither is established.

「谷地」

「谷地」

kenas kamedium
Kenas is a low wooded riverbank or plain; ka denotes its upper/surface area. Kaizawa’s 1969 narrative directly uses nay kenas ka peka for travelling through a stream’s wooded area (biratori/006/005#71). This supports the selected word division beyond component matching. The record’s broader 谷地 wetland heading remains a qualification: the phrase is not independently established as an exact swamp noun.

Batchelor directly records Kutunne “craggy”, giving lexical support beyond the inherited uncertain comparison. 「津浪山づみ」

ohakopemedium
Batchelor explicitly gives Ohakobe for a tidal wave or tsunami, supporting ohakope with modern p. Hirayama gives the same comparison. The inherited “water crossing a hill” explanation does not independently establish an o-ha-ko-pe etymology. The added 山づみ wording in the current gloss remains visible and is not explained by the dictionary’s simpler 津浪 sense.

「曇る」

niskurimedium
Batchelor directly lists Nishkuri as “cloudy”, matching both final リ and the 曇る heading more closely than the previous cloud noun niskur. Tamura gives niskur “cloud” and niskur an “be cloudy”. Select niskuri as the closer lexical comparison while retaining niskur as an alternative; the record alone cannot establish whether its final vowel was phonemic. somedium
Both dictionaries explicitly identify so as a waterfall. The Japanese 瀧 supports that sense over the homonymous floor, exposed rock and grammatical words. So is retained as the modern comparison; soo tests the source’s length mark without asserting historical phonemic vowel length.

「林」

teykurguess
Teykur transcribes テイグル; teykuru retains the written final vowel. The consulted evidence provides no independently attested teykur. Nikur is the better-supported lexical candidate: Kayano and Batchelor record it for tree shade, the corpus includes ni kur with that meaning, and the comparison extract has 林原/ニイクル. The connection remains tentative because the initial kana differ (テイ/ニイ), and 林 and 木陰 are different meanings.

「所の繁昌」

kotan sipimedium
NINJAL explicitly records kotan sipi “the village revives”, and Kayano gives sipi “revive”. This supports dividing the recorded form into kotan sipi. Revival is related to the heading’s prosperity but does not prove identical meaning. Batchelor’s joined Kotan-shipi denotes a town or village; it is a different semantic comparison. The historical comparison extract glosses the expression as the place becoming fertile; its modern romanization is not itself dated 1792.

「煙」

sipuyamedium
Sipuya is retained: eleven corpus records in the nam-kuzuno collection use this spelling, including sioynane sipuya kurkasi with a Japanese translation referring to sacred smoke. This supports the recorded シブヤ without silently substituting supuya. Tamura and Nakagawa supply supuya as a related smoke word. The corpus metadata date the sample recording to 1986; these later prayer texts do not prove eighteenth-century pronunciation or independent evidence from eleven speakers.

Sirpopke follows the joined spelling used by Kayano and Nakagawa. Tamura defines warm weather and explicitly includes weather hot enough to cause sweating; Batchelor gives hot weather. These support 暑. 「冽」

rakkamedium
Hirayama’s clear-water interpretation supplies a plausible comparison for 冽. Batchelor distinguishes a river shoal from putting muddy water to settle. Hirayama prints 洌 and identifies the clear-water entry; the Samani vocabulary records intransitive rakka for water becoming clear or starch settling. This supports retaining rakka and raising confidence, while the Japanese gloss and transitive/intransitive differences remain qualified. Kanjipedia distinguishes 冽 “cold” from 洌 “clear/cold” and notes their mixed use. A cold-water reading of the Japanese remains possible; the Ainu evidence consulted here supports clearing or settling. Ratci is the Samani editor’s Saru comparison. The separate 瀬/ラツカ entry is unchanged.

「陰」

isempirmedium
Batchelor’s Isempiri means behind or shadow and supports the whole-form comparison. Tamura’s sempir and sempiri identify the related spatial relation. Isempir retains the current reading of final ル as r; isempiri tests Batchelor’s final vowel, while i sempir tests a division whose first element is not established here. The shadow/hidden-behind range fits 陰, but exact morphology remains qualified.

「明き地」

Siri oha preserves the source リ vowel while making the proposed division explicit. Batchelor gives Shiri-oha “empty”, compatible with 明き地. Tamura’s shorter sir-oha refers to being absent from home, which does not establish an open-ground noun. Siri-oha, siroha and sir oha are comparison spellings; the exact historical construction remains qualified.

「明き屋」

ohacisemedium
Tamura explicitly defines ohacise as an empty house, and the Mukawa vocabulary gives the same form and meaning. Batchelor’s Oha example also means an empty house. This directly fits 明き屋. Oha cise displays the components. Hirayama’s longer ohachiseiruhe comparison concerns a guardian spirit; that extra material is unnecessary for identifying this recorded house word.

「爐」

inunpemedium
Tamura explicitly cross-refers inunpe to inumpe, the wooden boards framing a hearth; Kayano and Batchelor give the same object. Corpus contexts also distinguish inunpe from apeoy, the hearth itself. This supports the reading but narrows the referent relative to the general Japanese 爐. inumpe is an attested spelling alternative, not evidence for a different object. The other source occurrences under 炉縁 and 囲炉裡 remain unchanged.

「右座」

harkisomedium
Tamura explicitly identifies harkiso as the seat on the right when entering, called 左座 from the opposite viewpoint; Nakagawa supplies the same left/right explanation. Hirayama pairs the recorded ハルキシヨ with 炉(右座) and compares the modern seat name. The close form and contextual sense justify medium confidence. The viewpoint remains inferred, and historical シヨ is preserved rather than silently corrected. harukiso is a more vowel-explicit comparison with no retrieved corpus match.

「灰」

pasnamedium
Batchelor Pasna explicitly means cinders/ashes and fits 灰; the neighboring Pashna dust entry provides a related comparison. Hirayama also records this source form under 灰. The single pasna corpus result is a 2024 social-media vocabulary record repeating the dictionary gloss, which adds no secure early or independent attestation. The consonant-cluster reading pasna is retained; pasina would preserve an extra vowel but is not established here.

paspasmedium
The source repeats ハシ with 〳〵. Tamura, Kayano, Nakagawa and Batchelor give paspas for charcoal or cinders; Hirayama reads this source entry as ハシハシ and compares パシパシ. pas is also a charcoal word but drops the recorded repetition. Select paspas while leaving the original iteration marks intact. Corpus examples include charcoal and other burnt residues; their senses must be checked individually.

「沈み磯」

raokurumedium
Batchelor explicitly gives Raokuru for a hidden rock, matching 沈み磯 and the full recorded kana. Hirayama cites that comparison, so it is not a second independent attestation. Retain the final vowel in raokuru; the shortened raokur remains an unconfirmed alternative. Both corpus queries return zero, which does not overturn the dictionary evidence or establish an eighteenth-century date for it.

「泻」

sirar is well attested for rocks, including seashore rocks, and Hirayama compares sirari in that terrain sense. The Japanese 泻 remains ambiguous: related 瀉 can concern flowing/pouring or saline ground, while 潟 concerns tidal flats or lagoons. These comparisons do not securely equate the heading with a rocky shore. The alternative sirari also has an independently attested sake-lees homonym, which does not fit this terrain context. Retain sirar provisionally without replacing the Japanese character.

「日和」

nisor anmedium
The radio textbook explicitly writes nisor an and glosses it 晴れる, supporting the separated modern reading for 日和. Its cover dates the volume January–March 2000; the corpus labels it 1999 from the fiscal-year series. Another nisor an corpus example merely says the sky exists. NINJAL 043#6 gives nisoro an with a questioned cloudy gloss, so that vowel-preserving variant cannot be treated as unambiguous fair-weather evidence. The earlier apostrophe spelling is retained as a comparison, not a probability claim.
